Front row duo commit to new deals
Hull Kingston Rovers props Robbie Mulhern and Josh Johnson have become the latest players to agree new contract extensions with the club.
The front row duo have followed in the footsteps of centre Andrew Heffernan in extending their stay at KCOM Craven Park by penning two-year deals that will keep them with the Robins until the end of the 2019 campaign.
As with Heffernan, both players have committed to staying with Rovers regardless of the club’s league status next season, but Mulhern says the focus amongst the first team squad remains fixed on securing promotion to Super League in the Qualifiers later this year.
“Everybody here wants to be promoted this season but I think it’s good that a lot of the lads are signing deals to stay here regardless. It shows that there is a plan for next season either way but the goal for this year hasn’t changed,” he said.
“The main thing for the future of the club is to get as many of the players tied down to long-term contracts as possible and I’m delighted to be part of that.
“I’m really happy to have everything sorted. I feel like I’ve really been progressing well under Tim this season. I think I’ve taken my chances well when I’ve played and I’m feeling really confident in my abilities, so I want to carry that on into the ‘Middle 8s’ now.”
Johnson said: “I’m delighted to get it sorted. Tim and the boys have been great since day one so I’m really pleased to have signed a new deal for another two years here at the club.
“I’ve settled in really well so far. To be honest, you’re always a bit worried when come into a new club because you don’t know what to expect, but it’s been a really good move for me. Hopefully, I’d like to think that I’ve given a bit back to repay Tim for the faith he’s shown in me by bringing me into the club and I want to carry on ripping in for the rest of the season.
“It’s our ambition to go up this year and everybody will be really disappointed if we don’t. We need to start building a bit of form over these next few weeks and then really kick on in the ‘Middle 8s’ to secure our place in Super League.
“Everyone is focusing on that goal but it’s a good group here and it’s good that the lads are signing and committing to the club. Whatever happens, there’s going to be a fair few of us sticking around and having a good dig for the badge.”
