Castleford Tigers Victory
On this day ….. 22 May
Eleven years ago today, on 22 May 2009, Rovers earned a sixth consecutive win when they beat Castleford 16-6 in a hard-fought game at Craven Park.
Rovers started brightly, and successive penalties brought their reward as Shaun Briscoe created space to send Peter Fox over in the corner. Michael Dobson was unable to convert from the touchline but Rovers kept up the pressure and went close again when a Dobson kick almost put in Liam Colbon. Dobson and Scott Murrell were then both stopped short by desperate Castleford defending and a powerful break by Kris Welham was halted only by another fine tackle. The Tigers’ defence continually frustrated Rovers, but Cas wasted a chance to score themselves when Ferres knocked on close to the line. The visitors then appealed for a penalty try after Dixon was impeded by Fox. Referee Hewer awarded only a penalty, Rovers’ defence held firm, and the home side led 4-0 at the break.
Rovers extended their advantage three minutes into the second half when Dobson’s kick bounced perfectly for Briscoe to dive over under the posts. Dobson’s conversion made it 10-0, but Castleford bounced back straightaway with a converted try by Sargent. Well led by the ever-dangerous Dobson, Rovers continued to press, but Castleford’s defence was working overtime. Chev Walker, returning to the side after injury, drove hard for the line and slipped a pass to Ben Fisher, but the hooker knocked on and the chance went begging. Rovers finally made the game safe when Stanley Gene burst through the defence with eleven minutes to go to send Briscoe in for a second; Dobson converting.
The Rovers team that night was – Shaun Briscoe; Peter Fox, Kris Welham, Jake Webster, Liam Colbon; Ben Cockayne, Michael Dobson; Nick Fozzard, Dan Fitzhenry, Clint Newton, Chev Walker, Ben Galea, Scott Murrell. Bench: Ben Fisher, Stanley Gene, Scott Wheeldon, Makali Aizue.
