Match Report

The Red and Whites were left to rue a poor second quarter as they bowed out of the 2010 Carnegie Challenge Cup at the hands of a rampant Huddersfield side...

The Robins travelled to the Galpharm Stadium in confident mood after recording comfortable wins against Harlequins and Warrington in their previous two games. However Justin Morgan lost the services of Josh Hodgson after the hooker injured a shoulder against the Wolves, so Ben Fisher took the youngster's place on the bench.

In front of a stand packed full of travelling fans, the Robins got the tie underway, but were somewhat fortunate not to fall behind early.

Shaun Briscoe looked to shepherd Brett Hodgson's kick over the touchline, only for Leroy Cudjoe to flick the ball back infield for Jamahl Lolesi to touch down. But after consulting with his assistant, referee Richard Silverwood disallowed the try, ruling that Cudjoe's flick had travelled forward.

The Robins responded by building pressure on the Giants' line, with Michael Dobson's chip forcing a drop-out. But as gaps began to appear in the home side's defence, and with the line at his mercy, Joel Clinton couldn't hold onto Ben Galea's pass.

As is so often the case in rugby league, missed chances are quickly punished, and Huddersfield did just that.

Kevin Brown's chip was palmed down by Cudjoe, and this time nothing was going to stop prevent Lolesi scoring.

Brett Hodgson converted and the Giants were soon back on the attack again, with only a superb tackle from Clinton prevented Keith Mason from barging over.

However basic mistakes from the Robins meant they were soon scrambling on their own line again, and although a big shoulder charge from Scott Murrell halted Eorl Crabtree's progress just short of the line, it only delayed the inevitable.

On the next play, the Giants sent the ball wide, and David Fa'alogo touched down. Brett Hodgson converted again, and just minutes later he was adding his third goal of the afternoon.

Brown's inside ball sent David Faiumu through, and Luke Robinson was in support to score as the home side ruthlessly made the Red and Whites pay for a series of sloppy handling mistakes and penalties.

With half-time approaching, Huddersfield were in no mood to let up as they forced back-to-back drop-outs on the Rovers line before Brown's cut-out ball put David Hodgson in at the corner.

Brett Hodgson hooked his conversion wide, but the damage had already been done, as the Robins trailed by four scores at the break.

Half-Time: Huddersfield Giants 22      Hull KR 0

The Red and Whites had left themselves a mountain to climb in the second half if they had any hopes of progressing in the 2010 Carnegie Challenge Cup, but having played for most of the second quarter without the ball, they at least knew where they needed to improve.

However the early stages of the second period promised little improvement, with the Robins fortunate not to fall further behind in the first few minutes as the Giants looked to kill the tie off.

Instead, it was the men from East Hull who drew first blood in the second half, thanks in no small part to the hard work of Galea.

The loose-forward's long kick and committed chase earned the Red and Whites a repeat set, before a superb offload allowed Clint Newton to put Jake Webster in at the corner.

Dobson tagged on the extras from the touchline to give the Robins some hope, but after Dobson forced another repeat set on the Huddersfield line, a Galea long ball was picked off by Danny Brough.

Although Shaun Briscoe chased the former Wildcat hard, he couldn't prevent him extending the Giants' advantage and snuffing out any faint hope which had been sparked by Webster's score.

Brett Hodgson converted, but on their next visit to Huddersfield territory, Briscoe's commitment brought him a try.

Scott Murrell's grubber from dummy half looked to be too strong, but as Luke Robinson watched on, Briscoe dived in to touch down just millimetres short of the dead-ball line.

Dobson converted, but that was as good as it got for the Robins, as the Giants ended the Red and Whites' involvement in the Challenge Cup for 2010 by adding two late tries - Fa'alogo with his second and Martin Aspinwall in the final minute.
