Under 20's Championship
Hull Kingston Rovers 48

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 12

After tasting defeat against St. Helens the previous weekend, a hat trick of tries from Scott Spaven, making his first appearance of the season, was a highlight of Rovers nine try defeat of Wakefield.

The Robins took the pitch with a young squad - nine of last year's Under 18's squad wearing the Red and White against the 2009 Gillette Academy Grand Final Champions, who fielded no less than 11 of their Grand Final winning side.

Trinity had all the early play, orchestrated by stand-off Cain Southernwood, who had been named in Wakefield's 19-man Super League squad the previous day, but it was Rovers who scored first.

Josh Wilson intercepted on his own 20-metre line and outran all pursuers for the opening try, Ben Hardcastle converting.

Almost immediately afterwards the game was held up for some five minutes when Wakefield second rower Danny Cowling attempted a crash tackle close to the Wildcats line, only to badly miss-time the hit and be stretchered off with what turned out to be a shoulder injury - post-match news suggesting that the player was thankfully not as seriously injured as had first been feared.

The ensuing play saw Rovers force a goal-line restart, after which an inspired Spaven offload allowed Nick Johnson to cross wide out, and despite the awkward angle, Hardcastle goaled.

It was all Rovers now as Trinity struggled to get their hands on the ball, and by the half hour mark the Robins had stretched their lead to 28 points.

Wilson went over on the short side before Spaven scored consecutive tries, one from a beautiful Hardcastle break, the other direct from dummy half, with Hardcastle landing two more goals.

Just as in the previous evening's Super League game, when Trinity struck back immediately after the interval, Wakefield's Under 20's did too.

Matthew Wildie, who alongside Southernwood were the key men for the Wildcats, slipped away on a terrific angled run for a try goaled by Southernwood, but there was to be no repeat of the previous night's result as Rovers proceeded to wrap up the points - and their first win of the season - with a quartet of well-worked scores.

Nick Powley scored two of them, first running strongly onto fullback Jack Latus' perfectly judged long pass to cross in the corner, then touching down in virtually the same spot six minutes afterwards thanks to Latus and Johnson who played him outside the cover.

With 15 minutes left, Spaven completed his hat trick and five minutes afterwards some clever footwork from substitute Joe Charlton opened the way for Dominic Dee to crash over, Hardcastle kicking both conversions.

However, Wakefield were not to be denied, and in the final moments Wildie scooted through to score in the corner, and Southernwood's touchline conversion ended a good, hard-fought game.
