Match Report
Brett Hodgson kicked a penalty from the touchline with the last play of the game to hold the Robins to a draw.
The Robins travelled to the Galpharm Stadium after completing a double over the Harlequins courtesy of a convincing victory at Craven Park. Shaun Briscoe was forced to watch on from the sidelines after failing to shake off the leg injury which forced him off against the Quins, so Ben Cockayne switched to full-back. Youngster Sam Latus came in for his debut on the wing, while Scott Taylor kept his spot on the bench in place of the injured Jason Netherton.
Roared on by a vocal travelling support, the Robins got off to a solid start with Ben Cockayne dealing superbly with a towering spiral bomb from Danny Brough, and Ben Fisher missing out on a 40-20 by only a couple of metres.
The Giants came close to opening the scoring 11 minutes in though, as David Hodgson touched down after Kevin Brown's cross-kick broke loose. However video referee Richard Silverwood ruled that Michael Lawrence had knocked the ball on as he competed for it with Peter Fox.
The Red and Whites took full advantage of that slice of luck and after their first penalty of the game put them on the attack, Scott Murrell touched down.
Stephen Wild was penalised for a high tackle on Joel Clinton, and on the last tackle of the subsequent set, Murrell's grubber deflected off Luke Robinson's leg and the former Leeds junior reacted first to score.
Michael Dobson converted and in their next attack, the Robins repeated the dose with a well-worked try.
Dobson's chip and Kris Welham's chase forced a drop-out, and after Keith Mason was penalised for a late hit on Dobson to give Rovers a third repeat set, Clint Newton charged over.
On the last tackle, the Giants defence was focused on closing down Dobson on the short side, but Ben Fisher faked to throw the long ball and simply popped it up for the rampaging Newton to race over.
Dobson converted again as the Robins were rewarded for playing good, error-free rugby, however as the half-hour mark approached, they made their first mistake and were made to pay for it.
Mike Ratu knocked-on on halfway as the Huddersfield defence rushed up, and in the next set, Kevin Brown's grubber was grounded by Lawrence.
Brett Hodgson converted and as the home side immediately looked to capitalise on their momentum.
The Giants moved the ball wide, but Murrell did well to shoot in on Jamahl Lolesi and stop the danger. As he did so, Lolesi attempted to offload, and as the ball deflected off Murrell's hand, Welham swooped in to pick up and race clear. However a certain Rovers try was denied by referee Phil Bentham's whistle.
Bentham penalised Murrell for the knock-on, and from the ensuing scrum, Brough kicked ahead for Lawrence to chase.
The tall centre looked to be favourite for the ball, but Cockayne did superbly to nip in first and see off the danger - even avoiding conceding a drop-out.
Rovers were riding their luck - a fact that emphasised when Brough's chip bounced just too high for Brown to re-gather allowing Ratu to come away with the ball.
In the final minutes, the Robins had one last attack of their own, but Dobson's chip was plucked out of the air just inches away from Welham's waiting arms by Brown.
That appeared to be the final chance for points, but a Huddersfield knock-on presented the Robins with one last opportunity.
Ratu's strong drive was halted just short, and on the final play, Dobson attempted a drop-goal from wide out but the ball drifted just wide.
Half-Time: Huddersfield Giants 6 Hull KR 12
The Red and Whites held a narrow advantage at the start of the second period, but Huddersfield's comeback against Hull FC the week before was a stark warning of what the Giants were capable of in that situation.
If the Robins needed any more of a reminder, the home side capitalised on Josh Hodgson's knock-on at the play-the-ball to quickly level the scores.
Brad Drew shot away from dummy-half, catching the Red and Whites on the back foot, before finding a flying Brown with an inside ball, sending the stand-off racing over next to the posts.
Brett Hodgson added the extras, and in the Giants' next attack, he gave them the lead.
Ben Galea was penalised for a late tackle on Brown, and the home side took the two points on offer to edge ahead.
Huddersfield had their tails up, but Rovers were working hard in defence and came back at the Giants.
Dobson's high kick was knocked-on in his own in-goal area by David Hodgson, and in the next set, Ben Galea's grubber was palmed out of play by Brett Hodgson just as Welham was ready to pounce.
That gave the Robins a third repeat set, but they were just unable to find the breakthrough they needed in the Giants' quarter.
The Red and Whites were beginning to dominate field position as the game entered the final 10 minutes, they were rewarded.
David Faiumu's eagerness to offload backfired as he knocked-on, and in the next set, Graeme Horne was penalised for stealing the ball from Clinton right under the nose of referee Bentham.
Dobson took the two points to level the scores, and three minutes later he was handed another chance.
A big shot from Clinton caused Keith Mason to spill the ball, and with Rovers hammering on the Giants' door, Faiumu was caught offside.
Dobson coolly slotted over the penalty to edge the Robins ahead with seven minutes left, and as Huddersfield threw the kitchen sink at the Red and Whites, it looked as though they would hold on. But the final minute brought the most dramatic of conclusions.
From deep inside his own half, Brown chipped across for Lolesi, who looked to have been offside, but he gathered and raced clear before kicking ahead past Cockayne.
Brown and Cudjoe looked to have no competition for the bouncing ball, but somehow Galea managed to get back to challenge Brown for the ball on the try line and force him to knock-on. However the Giants pushed the Robins off the ball at the resulting scrum, and Brough chipped across for David Hodgson.
The Huddersfield winger caught the ball, but video referee Silverwood ruled that Peter Fox had attempted to tackle him in the air and awarded a penalty on the touchline in the final seconds.
Brett Hodgson stepped up, and with the entire Galpharm Stadium biting their collective nails, he calmly stroked the ball over to save a draw for the Giants and deny the Robins a win they most certainly deserved.
