Match Report

Two tries from Peter Fox helped the Robins record a comfortable victory over a high-flying Warrington side...

After a busy Easter period, and with a resounding win over Harlequins RL to their credit, the Robins returned to Craven Park to take on the Carnegie Challenge Cup holders, Warrington Wolves.

Shaun Briscoe and Joel Clinton were both passed fit after shoulder and elbow problems, while Peter Fox continued despite picking up a knock on his injured leg. Josh Hodgson returned to action in place of Ben Fisher, while Matt Cook moved to the bench after a try-scoring return against Quins.

Thanks to back-to-back penalties in the first few minutes, the Wolves had the first attacking chance of the game, but good pressure from Kris Welham forced Matt King to knock-on.

That was only a brief reprieve for the Robins' goal-line defence though, as Warrington were soon knocking on the door again, keeping the ball alive at every opportunity.

Good offloads from Chris Riley and King stretched the Rovers defence, and on the last tackle, Richie Myler's inside ball put Richie Mathers through a hole and over. The former Leeds full-back was rather fortunate not to have wasted the chance though, after ignoring the supporting Myler and somehow grounding the ball under Shaun Briscoe.

Ben Westwood converted, but the Robins came straight back and almost cancelled out the score immediately. Michael Dobson's grubber into the in-goal area was chased hard by Peter Fox and Jake Webster, but the Kiwi was just unable to ground the ball before the dead-ball line.

The breakthrough was only a matter of time in coming though, and as the mid-way point of the half approached, the Red and Whites launched an attack from deep.

Scott Murrell's short ball in his own quarter put Fox into the clear, and although he was closed down by Chris Hicks, the Wolves winger was penalised for a high tackle. Another repeat set kept the pressure on the visitors, and Ben Galea's face ball on the short side sent Welham strolling over.

Dobson converted, and as the Robins grew in confidence, they looked to build on their advantage after another break-out.

As Louis Anderson rushed out of the line, looking for a big hit on Rhys Lovegrove, the prop saw him coming and flicked the ball out to Fox, who again raced into the clear.

The Wolves again recovered to bring him down, but Josh Hodgson's sharp service allowed Dobson and Welham to send Ben Cockayne flying in at the corner.

Rovers had Warrington on the back-foot, and quickly ripped through the Wolves' defence to force home their advantage again.

Dobson sliced through the visitors' line on the last tackle, found Chaz I'Anson, and although Mathers' ankle-tap brought him down, the stand-off flicked the ball up and as ever, Briscoe was in support to dive over.

Dobson converted, but with half-time approaching, the Wolves took advantage of a repeat set on the Robins' line to cut the deficit at the break to one score, as King burrowed over after Paul Wood's offload, Westwood converting.

Half-Time: Hull KR 16      Warrington Wolves 12

Warrington's try on half-time gave them the momentum going into the break, and they quickly set about levelling the scores.

Myler's perfectly positioned 40-20 put the Wolves in perfect field position, and straight from the scrum, they moved the ball wide and Chris Riley went over at the corner.

The visitors were firmly in the driving seat, but the Robins wasted no time in re-establishing their advantage.

Welham was within millimetres of grounding Dobson's grubber, but Mathers just managed to flick it dead. However in the next set, a Dobson chip was flicked back by Webster to Clint Newton, and he sent Fox over at the corner.

Dobson converted, and five minutes later, Welham was again unlucky not to score after just failing to hold on to a clever Dobson kick off the outside of his boot.

Suddenly all the momentum was with the Robins, and as Dobson kicked for the line, looking for another drop-out, the ball deflected off King's leg and Matt Cook reacted first to snap the ball up and touch down.

Dobson's conversion from wide out extended the Red and Whites' advantage to two scores, and as Warrington imploded, Rovers quickly extended their lead.

Good defensive pressure forced a hurried pass to ricochet off David Solomona's foot, straight to I'Anson, and he sent Fox flying away for his second, waving to the chasing Simon Grix on his way.

That prompted Grix to confront Fox behind the posts, and caused the Wolves to lose their discipline completely.

The visitors gave away a string of penalties as they searched for retribution, allowing Dobson an easy two points before Chris Bridge was finally yellow carded, leaving the Robins to finish comfortable and deserved winners.
