Dobson to skipper Robins in 2013
Michael Dobson has been named as the Robins’ new captain with Kris Welham assuming the role of vice-captain in 2013.
The Australian scrum-half replaces the departed Ben Galea and Head Coach, Craig Sandercock, says that appointing Dobson as skipper was an easy decision.
“Michael captained the side early last season and did a really good job,” he said. “He has great communication skills and is well respected by both the players and staff so it was a simple decision to appoint him as captain.
“As regards Kris, he has really started to show signs of being a good leader over the last 12 months. He is the classic case of someone who leads by example both on and off the pitch. Kris fully deserves to be our vice-captain and will develop even further as his career continues at Hull KR.”
Meanwhile, Dobson admitted that it’s an honour to have been given the job and commented.
“Some great names have captained this club and I’m proud to have joined the list. Sandy (Craig Sandercock) spoke to me about things and said he’d like me to take the job on and I was delighted to.
“I’ve been here a few years now and enjoy having extra responsibility so it’s something I was more than happy to take on. In terms of on the field, being the captain won’t change my game much really. It’s more off the field where that extra responsibility will come and I need to be setting an example, especially for the younger blokes.
“It’s something I’m really looking forward to and intend to grab the role with both hands and enjoy it.”
The Aussie is also looking forward to having Welham as his able deputy and added:
“I’m stoked for Welly that he’s got the extra responsibility as I think he’s shown over past couple of years that he’s developed into a senior player. He’s one of the mainstays of our side and I’m sure he’ll do a great job as the vice-captain.”
