Marc Hackney joins board of directors

Hull Kingston Rovers are delighted to confirm that lifelong supporter and commercial sponsor Marc Hackney has joined the club’s board of directors with immediate effect.

In a significant move within the upper echelons of the club, Marc has been appointed by chairman Neil Hudgell and vice-chairman Rob Crossland to add his considerable business experience and commercial expertise to the role having had a long-term relationship with Rovers as the managing director of wealth management firm Vobis Limited, the parent company of well-known club sponsors Outbox and bright-I.

Marc’s background is as an accountant and tax adviser, training first in Hull at one of the world’s largest accountancy firms before moving to London where he specialised in looking after clients in the world of sports, entertainment and media. Having left the accountancy profession, Marc set up various businesses in different industries and established his head office in Hull four years ago, whilst his advisory team remains in the capital.

A former schoolmate of Neil and Rob’s, Marc will now join them in overseeing the day-to-day running and progress of the club, working closely with the commercial team as well as other departments.

Rovers chairman Neil Hudgell said: “We’re delighted that Marc has agreed to join the board of directors and we’re confident he will make a key contribution as we strive to push the club forwards both on and off the field following our return to the Betfred Super League.

“He’s somebody who Rob and I know well, both personally and professionally, and he’s had a strong connection to the club as a commercial partner for a number of years. It seemed a natural fit for him to extend that involvement to board level and he will bring a great deal of experience to the position.

“Marc has already been working in his new role for a number of months before his appointment was formally announced, so he’s fully up-to-speed across the club and offering a fresh perspective in a number of areas.

“It’s an exciting time for Marc to be joining the board following our promotion to Super League. We have an excellent team of coaching staff led by Tim Sheens overseeing a performance department with a good culture and a real togetherness, whilst off the field we have made significant progress in all areas in recent years. However, we recognise that there is a lot of progress still to be made and we’re looking forward to having Marc’s input into this.”

Club director Marc Hackney added: “Being able to represent a club that has meant so much to my life and my family’s life makes me immensely proud.

“A few years ago, I was doing well in business and I decided I wanted to give something back by helping my boyhood club. Initially, I started by sponsoring a player and from then on my sponsorship and involvement with Hull KR has increased year on year.

“The conversations about joining the board then started about 12 months ago. I’d known Neil for a long time but we started talking about whether some of my London contacts, my knowledge and my business interests down there could potentially help Rovers and the commercial team at the club in particular.

“The club has a very good commercial team and they’ve done exceptionally well over the last three of four years to get to where we are now. They’ve never really had a consistent person that they’ve been able to talk to and work with because Neil, Rob and Mike have been busy with their own business interests or supporting other aspects of the club, so I’m now going to see if I can lend some extra support and assistance and maybe a few fresh ideas.

“We’ve got a good founding and a great fan base to work with but there’s more that can be done for the club to become financially sustainable and I’m excited about being involved.”
