MAUGHAN WINS IT FOR ROCKING ROBINS

Story in brief:
WINGER James Maughan was the match winning hero for Hull KR as they produced a grandstand finish to beat highly-rated Wigan Warriors in a pulsating U18’s play-off clash..

Rovers were trailing by two points going into the closing stages against a Warriors’ side that had lost just once all season.

But Maughan showed blistering finishing skills to go over in the corner and Kristian Bell banged over a towering touchline goal to put Rovers ahead.

However, the young Robins had to survive a late wave of Wigan pressure and the visitors were actually held up over the try-line by desperate defence before the final hooter.

In the end, it was a close run thing between two of the competition’s top sides. Rovers, though, deserved their hard-fought success.

Rovers went ahead with a touchdown from prop Callum Taylor and the strong running Liam Salter continued his excellent run of form with another first half touchdown. Bell added a couple of goals and Rovers led 12-4 at the break.

Wigan, inspired by stand-off Jack Murphy, hit back strongly and appeared to be in the driving seat when the grabbed the lead.

Scrum half Nathan Slater crossed for Rovers but it was the visitors who held that narrow advantage as the minutes ticked away.

Rovers, though, piled on the pressure and Maughan’s try – superbly goaled by England Academy call-up Bell – sealed a dramatic victory.
